In Windows 2000, NetBIOS is not necessary
for networking at all (unless you have NT 4.0 or Windows 98 OS
computers on your network).
Therefore, in order to close security holes, you should disable
NetBIOS. |
Configure
TCP/IP to use WINS
In order to
disable NetBIOS, you must have TCP/IP configured to use WINS.
To configure
TCP/IP to use WINS, follow the steps below. If you already have
TCP/IP configured to use Wins, skip to the next section:
Disable NetBIOS.
In your Start menu, select Settings,
then select Network and Dialup Connections
Right click Local Area Connection,
then select Properties from the menu
In the Properties dialog box, select
the General tab
Click Internet Protocols (TCP/IP),
then click Properties
In the Internet Protocols TCP/IP
Properties dialog box, click Advanced
Select WINS tab, then click
Add
In TCP/IP WINS server, type the IP
Address of the WINS server
Click Add
Disable
NetBIOS
Follow the steps
below to disable NetBIOS on your Windows 2000 computer:
In your Start menu, select Settings,
then select Network and Dialup Connections
Right click Local Area Connection,
select Properties from the menu
In the Properties dialog box, select
the General tab
Click Internet Protocols (TCP/IP),
then click Properties
In the Internet Protocols TCP/IP
Properties dialog box, click Advanced
Select WINS tab
Click Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP
Click OK
